So, recently there has been a lot of talk about the Iowa caucuses and with all this talk you really have to know how they work.  First of all, it’s not when people vote for who will be president, it’s when very politically motivated people vote for who they believe should make it on the ballot that would put them in office.  It’s a little complicated, so let me try and break it down for you.  Basically, the two major political parties, Republican and Democrat, have different ways of determining who will be on the Presidential ballot. The republicans have a secret vote that gets totaled up and then they decide who the Presidential candidate for the Republican party will be at the National Convention.  That’s the simple way.  The Democrats however, have a much more complex way of deciding who will represent them on the official ballot.  One of the Democratic caucuses for Colorado will actually be held at Centaurus High.  A bunch of democratic voters will gather and split up into different groups based on which candidates they like.  For a candidate to make it on the official election they need to have at least 15% of attendance in each group.  Now, people can try to persuade other people to vote for their candidates. But the process takes a really long time so usually only very politically motivated people attended.  Okay, so I hope I’ve at least summed it up a little for you.  In conclusion caucuses are when people vote for who will represent them on the official Presidential ballot.
