On Tuesday October 4th Kid Cudi, a rap artist known for his relationship with Kanye West and his groundbreaking Man On the Moon album, posted an announcement on his Facebook page explaining that he had checked into rehab for his depression. As he explained, “My anxiety and depression have ruled my life for as long as I can remember and I never leave the house because of it. I can’t make new friends because of it. I don’t trust anyone because of it and I’m tired of being held back in my life.”  This shouldn’t be too much of a surprise to fans of his music as his depression is often the focal point of his music with lyrics like

Tell me what you know about dreamin’ dreamin’ You don’t really know about nothin’ nothin’ Tell me what you know about them night terrors every night 5 AM, cold sweats wakin’ up to the sky

 ( Pursuit of Happiness 2009)

But, as a fan of Kid Cudi it’s hard to see him in this depressive state.

It can be difficult  for someone who has never struggled with mental illness to empathize with Kid Cudi, an artists who is able to make a living off his art alone. Instead of seeing Kid Cudi as the artist, it’s important to see him as Scott Mescudi, the person — another person who suffers from mental illness like the other 350 million people who suffer from it yearly. It’s important for celebrities, like Kid Cudi, to talk to the public about their mental health as it no longer becomes a “hush hush” topic, and is no longer seen as a weakness stopping people from getting the help they need.
